What is Pilates? An innovative system of mind-body exercise evolved from the principles of Joseph Pilates. These exercises can be performed on the floor (or mat) or on specially designed equipment such as the Reformer, the Cadillac, the tower or the Wunda chair.
Pilates dramatically transforms the way your body looks, feels, and performs. Pilates focuses on centering, alignment, breathing, control, precision, flowing movement, stability, and range of motion.
It builds strength without excess bulk, creating a sleek, sculpted body with slender thighs and a flat abdomen. Pilates teaches body awareness and good posture and results in graceful movements. Pilates improves flexibility and agility and economy of motion. As always, it is recommended that you consult with your doctor before you begin any exercise regimen.
Who was Joseph H. Pilates? Born in Germany in 1880, Joseph Pilates was a child who suffered from many illnesses. He dedicated his life to becoming physically fit and became proficient in many sports. During World War 1 he was interned as a German national in a war camp. He helped to rehabilitate English soldiers by developing exercises with springs and straps attached to their beds. When Pilates came to the United States in 1926, he established a studio in New York City to teach his method of Controlology, as he called it.
Today, his exercises are even more popular than ever before. Dancers, physical therapists, sports teams, celebrities and fitness enthusiasts everywhere are enjoying the benefits of Pilates.
Who should do Pilates? Pilates is beneficial for all ages, fitness levels and body conditions and can be adapted, modified and customized for individualized needs. In fact many doctors are taking note of this and prescribing Pilates and Yoga for various ailments.
Professional dancers, fitness enthusiasts and athletes have known the benefits of Pilates for decades along with top athletes, the armed forces, and famous celebrities! Senior citizens, people who suffer from chronic pain, joint stress and a variety of conditions will benefit from this method of exercise.
Will Pilates Help Me Lose Weight?
Pilates is famous for creating long, lean, fit bodies. There are many ways that doing Pilates supports weight loss and a trimmer appearance:
- Exercise burns calories. How many calories you burn depends on your body type and your level of exertion.
- Creating lean muscle mass, as Pilates does, is one of the best ways to increase your calorie-burning potential.
- One of the best ways to look and feel thinner is to have beautiful posture. Pilates creates a leaner look by emphasizing both length and good alignment.
- Pilates promotes deep and efficient respiration, which is essential for calorie burning and tissue regeneration.
- Engaging in an exercise program, like Pilates, promotes self-esteem and heightened lifestyle consciousness. Both are associated with weight loss.
