Put the Phone Down, and Step onto the Mat

A recent article in “Cooking Light” magazine discusses how much technology has become a part of our lives and how difficult it can be to just cut yourself off from it, even  just for a day. This constant need to be attached to cell phones, email, and the internet can really take its toll on the mind and body and can create a sense of anxiety if taken away. So what can you do to help curve this sense of anxiousness?

One great solution is Meditation. Meditation uses breathing to focus thoughts and center the mind. All you have to do is sit in a comfortable up right position, close your eyes and breathe in and out of your nose, focusing on each breath. It is a simple a way to work a little bit of “me time” into your day and forces you to step away from technology, even if it is just for fifteen minutes.

Another solution is yoga. Like meditation, yoga uses breathing techniques to focus your thoughts. Concentration on the breath allows you to put all of your troubles and anxieties aside and zone in on what you are doing in that moment, rather than what emails you might be missing. These breathing techniques can even be used when you step off the yoga mat and into your everyday life.

If you are interested in trying out Yoga, stop by the downtown Pittsburgh salon, Verve, and sign up for one of their classes.
